What duotone does

Every pixel's brightness is kept, but its colour is thrown away and replaced by a blend between two colours you choose. A dark pixel lands on the dark colour and a bright pixel on the light one, which is why a photo turns into a flat two-tone print.

Raising the contrast pushes the mid-tones apart, which is what gives duotone its poster-like separation. Lowering the gradient mix blends back towards the original photo, which is useful for checking how strong the effect is before committing.
